Kachikwu Claims Jonathan Offered Obi a Big Job to Quit 2027 Race

A political drama is unfolding ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. Dumebi Kachikwu, who ran for president in 2023 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has made a bold claim:
Former President Goodluck Jonathan allegedly offered Peter Obi a high-ranking position — Coordinating Minister of the Economy — if he agrees to step away from the 2027 presidential contest.

Kachikwu told reporters in Abuja on Friday that certain northern political figures are pushing Jonathan to join the race. He says this move is meant to reduce the chances of southern candidates winning.

According to him, some of these political figures believe Obi cannot win because he is Igbo. Kachikwu also alleged that Obi was advised to consider becoming Atiku Abubakar’s running mate instead of contesting for the presidency.

“Northern elites are still using region, religion, tribe, and poverty to influence millions of voters,” Kachikwu claimed. He accused them of spreading negative stories about all major southern presidential hopefuls, including President Bola Tinubu.

This claim adds a new twist to the already heated build-up for the 2027 election. Neither Jonathan nor Obi has publicly confirmed or denied the alleged offer.

If Kachikwu’s statement is accurate, it could mean that backroom deals and ethnic politics are still shaping Nigeria’s elections. It also raises questions about how far political leaders will go to secure power.
