Former Agriculture Minister Audu Ogbeh Dies at 78

Nigeria has lost one of its prominent elder statesmen as Chief Audu Ogbeh, former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, passed away at the age of 78. His family confirmed the news in a statement issued on Saturday, revealing that Ogbeh died peacefully on August 9, 2025.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Chief Audu Ogbeh. He departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service, and dedication to our nation and community,” the statement read.

The family praised Ogbeh as a man who touched many lives through decades of public service and inspired younger generations with his exemplary leadership.

Born on July 28, 1947, in present-day Benue State, Ogbeh attended King’s College, Lagos (1967–1969) before studying at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1969–1972) and later at the University of Toulouse, France (1973–1974).

Ogbeh’s political journey began in the Benue State House of Assembly. He later served as a minister under President Shehu Shagari’s administration from 1979 to 1983, and decades later, he returned to the federal cabinet as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s agricultural development, rural empowerment, and national unity.
