A pro–President Bola Tinubu campaign organisation, Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT), has raised alarm over the alleged removal of its signposts and billboards in Ondo State.
The group claims the structures, which were mounted to celebrate the administration’s achievements, were deliberately targeted and removed from strategic locations in Akure. This comes after Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa directed all Tinubu support groups to operate under a single platform to prevent duplication of efforts.
Secretary to the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Hon. Isaacs Kekemeke, clarified that independent support groups could still operate but must not serve as alternatives to the APC or divide the party.
The issue escalated after GMT alleged that its billboards — installed on streetlights along the Airport Road to Oba-Ile corridor — were “forcefully and cowardly taken down by faceless individuals.”
GMT’s Director of Media, Oyewamide Ojo, condemned the action, describing it as:
“An assault on democracy, a slap on free speech, and a deliberate attempt to erase the truth of the progress under President Tinubu.”
He vowed that the group would not be intimidated and called on the Ondo State Signage and Advertisement Agency (OSSA) and security agencies to investigate, identify, and prosecute those responsible.
“No act of sabotage can erase the reality of Nigeria’s positive transformation. They may bring down our structures, but they cannot break our spirit,” Ojo added.
Meanwhile, political tension deepened as some Ondo APC Advisory Council members allegedly boycotted a maiden meeting hosted by Governor Aiyedatiwa in Akure.
A source claimed that only 19 out of 54 statutory members attended. Absent were Ondo’s two federal ministers, the three state senators, and nine members of the House of Representatives.
The council, formed in 2019 during peace talks between the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and party stakeholders, was reportedly affected by disagreements over merging Tinubu support groups into a single campaign body.
However, a senior APC leader at the meeting dismissed reports of a boycott, insisting all invited members attended and reaffirmed unity behind Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
