Russia has carried out a massive overnight assault on Ukraine, deploying 85 Iranian-made Shahed drones and an Iskander-M ballistic missile, Kyiv confirmed on Saturday, just hours after US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded their much-anticipated summit in Alaska. The meeting, held on August 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, ended without any agreement on a ceasefire or roadmap to end the war that has now lasted more than three years.
According to a statement from the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched its attack beginning the evening of August 15 — while Trump and Putin were still in talks — and continued into the early hours of August 16.
“The enemy used one Iskander-M ballistic missile and 85 Shahed-type drones, targeting frontline areas across four regions,” Ukraine’s Air Force reported.
Kyiv said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 61 drones, but several others managed to strike infrastructure and civilian areas.
Despite international pressure, particularly from Western allies, the Trump-Putin summit ended without a ceasefire announcement. Observers had hoped the meeting might bring a shift toward peace, but neither side made concessions.
So far, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not officially commented on the outcome of the summit.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, sparking Europe’s most devastating conflict since World War II. The war has claimed thousands of lives, displaced millions, and fueled global economic instability.
Western governments continue to push Moscow for a ceasefire and withdrawal, but the Kremlin has maintained its military offensives while expanding drone and missile strikes across Ukrainian territory.
