Security agencies in Kaduna State have intercepted a suspected vote buyer with a whopping ₦25,963,000 ahead of the ongoing by-election in the state.
According to reports, the suspect, identified as Shehu Aliyu Patangi, was arrested around 3:30 am on Saturday at a popular hotel along Turunku Road, Kaduna metropolis. He was nabbed through a joint operation by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Suspect Confesses to Vote Buying
The Kaduna State Police Command revealed that a preliminary investigation confirmed the cash was intended for inducing voters to compromise the electoral process.
Police spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, disclosed that the suspect admitted to the crime during interrogation and pleaded for leniency.
Quoting the Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, he said:
“The suspect was caught with the cash, which he intended to use for bribing voters. He confessed and begged for mercy. We want to warn that anyone caught engaging in vote buying, thuggery, or election-related violence will face the full wrath of the law.”
The police further cautioned politicians and their supporters against acts capable of disrupting the by-elections. The Command confirmed receiving intelligence about plans by some political actors to instigate violence.
“Troublemakers, no matter their status, will be arrested and prosecuted. Residents are assured of maximum security before, during, and after the polls,” the statement added.
The arrest highlights the increasing crackdown on electoral malpractice in Nigeria, especially the issue of vote buying, which has continued to undermine the nation’s democratic process.
Voters in Kaduna and beyond have been urged to come out en masse, exercise their right to vote, and resist any attempt at inducement or intimidation.
