The Federal Government has ordered the immediate deportation of 42 foreign nationals from China and the Philippines after they were convicted of cybercrime-related offences in Lagos.
Sentenced for Online Fraud Activities
According to reports, the individuals were arrested during a major crackdown on an internet fraud syndicate. A Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced them to one year in prison each alongside a fine of ₦1 million per person under a plea bargain arrangement with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The convicts were transferred to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), which confirmed that the first batch left Lagos on Sunday afternoon, while additional groups are scheduled for deportation in the coming days.
Investigations revealed that the syndicate operated from a building disguised as a corporate office. Inside, the foreigners reportedly trained Nigerians on how to execute online scams, including Ponzi schemes. Laptops, phones, vehicles, and other digital tools were seized during the operation.
Officials say the deportation sends a strong message about Nigeria’s determination to curb cybercrime and protect its digital economy from exploitation by foreign syndicates.
“This action shows that the government will not tolerate criminal elements, whether local or foreign, operating within our borders,” an EFCC official stated.
