President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Pope Robert Francis Prevost, newly elected as Pope Leo XIV and the 267th Bishop of Rome.

The election of Pope Leo XIV marks history, as he becomes the first American to assume the papacy. At 69, Pope Prevost brings decades of experience, having served as a missionary in Peru and later appointed in 2023 by the late Pope Francis to oversee the Vatican’s office responsible for vetting bishop nominations worldwide — one of the most influential roles in the Catholic Church.

In a statement released on Thursday by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed joy and prayers for the success of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate.

💬 “The President felicitates the Conclave for electing the American Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost as the 267th Bishop of Rome. President Tinubu rejoices with the leadership and members of the Catholic Church in Nigeria on this historic election. The new Pontiff’s message of faith and hope resonates across the globe, assuring believers of a more peaceful world,” the statement read.

President Tinubu’s congratulatory message highlights the significance of this election not just for the Catholic Church, but for millions of faithful in Nigeria and across Africa who look to the Vatican for spiritual guidance.
