STOP THE POLITICS, START GOVERNING — OBI WARNS POLITICIANS

Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has urged political leaders across Nigeria to redirect their attention from endless political discourse to meaningful governance focused on the well-being of the people.

“It’s time we, as politicians, stopped centering our conversations around political permutations and started focusing on policies that directly impact the people,” Obi said. “We must invest in measurable areas of development—education, healthcare, and poverty reduction. Real governance begins with investing in people.”

He noted that the true essence of leadership is service, stressing that public resources must be redirected from luxury and excess toward building a just and equitable society.

• “We cannot justify a society where vast sums are spent on luxury vehicles for public office holders while students lack basic learning facilities,” he continued. “Our young people are struggling for tools to access quality education. Many schools still lack proper classrooms and chairs. Meanwhile, politicians live extravagantly. That has to change.”

Referencing his own humble beginnings, the former Governor of Anambra State reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for a society where “a child of nobody can become somebody.”

As part of his engagement with students at the University of Calabar, Mr. Obi made a personal donation of ₦20 million to the institution’s Dentistry Department for the acquisition of five dental chairs. He also appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to support the students further by helping to provide an additional ten chairs.

Encouraging students to remain focused and committed, he said: “Your education is your greatest asset. It’s what will equip you to compete globally.”

When asked about his political aspirations for 2027, Obi politely declined to delve into future elections, maintaining that his current priority is addressing the pressing issues facing ordinary Nigerians.

“I’m not here to talk about 2027,” he stated. “Let’s talk about how to get food on the table for the average Nigerian, how to ensure our children stay in school, and how to make hospitals functional for everyone. When the time comes, we’ll cross that bridge—and yes, I will be there.”
