TINUBU HONOURS SUPER FALCONS WITH $100,000, NATIONAL TITLES, AND HOMES AFTER WAFCON TRIUMPH

In a historic gesture of national pride and reward, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured the Super Falcons of Nigeria with national awards, cash gifts of $100,000 each, and three-bedroom houses for their outstanding performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The announcement came on Monday during a special reception hosted at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the President formally welcomed the African champions following their dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Morocco in the WAFCON final held in Rabat.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR AFRICA’S QUEENS

President Tinubu conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on each member of the victorious squad, as well as on their 11-member technical team, who also received $50,000 each in recognition of their role in the historic win.

“You have returned home as champions. This is not just a sports victory—it is a testament to Nigeria’s resilience, courage, and unity,” Tinubu said.

The President admitted he was initially reluctant to watch the match due to nerves but said he was captivated by the Falcons’ fighting spirit, especially after they overturned a two-goal deficit.

GOVERNORS ADD N10 MILLION GIFT

In addition to the federal government’s reward, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), represented by its chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced a cash donation of N10 million to each player and technical staff member on behalf of the 36 state governors.

Governor AbdulRazaq said the gesture was a collective show of appreciation from the sub-national leadership, acknowledging the team’s contribution to national pride and unity.

FIRST LADY: “YOU ARE ROLE MODELS”

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also addressed the team, calling the Super Falcons “inspiring role models” whose performance exemplifies strength, passion, and resilience.

“You reminded the world why Nigeria remains a powerhouse in African football. I believe your next stop is the World Cup, and I know you can do it,” she said, to applause.

FALCONS CAPTAIN DEDICATES WIN TO NIGERIAN GIRLS

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade spoke on behalf of her teammates, dedicating the victory to every young girl across Nigeria who dares to dream.

“This win is for every village girl with a dream, every child in our cities who believes in their potential. We are proud daughters of this nation, and this triumph belongs to all of Nigeria,” she said.

Ajibade urged the government and stakeholders to sustain their support for women’s football, stating that greater investment will drive global success for the team.

NATIONAL UNITY THROUGH SPORT

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, commended the Tinubu administration for its continued investment in sports development, especially women’s sports.

“This triumph is a symbol of unity. In those 90 minutes, Nigerians from every region celebrated as one. That’s the power of sports—and of our women,” Dikko stated.

He also praised the First Lady for her visible support of women in sports, noting her role in empowering athletes and strengthening national morale.
