Armed Herdsmen, Boko Haram Kill Soldiers, Civilians in Benue, Borno

ABUJA — At least three people were killed on Monday when suspected armed herdsmen attacked Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, while Boko Haram insurgents launched an assault on a military base in Borno State, killing two Nigerian soldiers.

The Benue herdsmen attack comes just weeks after a similar incident claimed over 200 lives in the same community, despite recent assurances from President Bola Tinubu and the setup of a security committee to curb the killings.

According to a government official, the victims were working on their farms when the assailants struck. Three others were injured, while some escaped unhurt.

The killings triggered angry protests as women from the community blocked the Makurdi–Lafia Road, calling on the government to stop armed herdsmen violence and reclaim their occupied lands.

Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Security, Joseph Har, confirmed the incident, stating it occurred near Yelewata. Guma LGA Chairman Maurice Orwough also confirmed the killings and appealed for peace.

Boko Haram Strikes Military Formation in Borno

In Kirawa, a border community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, suspected Boko Haram fighters attacked a Nigerian Army formation on Saturday night, killing two soldiers and abducting a female student.

Eyewitnesses said the insurgents entered the town in two groups around 9:30 p.m., shooting indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee into Cameroon. Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, confirmed the incident, lamenting the absence of the commanding officer at the time of the attack.

Police spokesman ASP Kenneth Daso confirmed receiving the report but said casualty figures were yet to be verified.

However, Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, dismissed reports that Nigerian troops were attacked, saying the incident happened in Cameroon involving Cameroonian soldiers.
