Chinese Embassy Breaks Silence on Alleged Abuse of Nigerian Workers in Central African Republic

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has responded to shocking allegations made by 12 Nigerian workers who were recently rescued from the Central African Republic (CAR). The workers accused their Chinese mining employers of sexual abuse, starvation, and non-payment of wages, sparking widespread outrage.

In a statement issued on Saturday, a Chinese Embassy official said the matter is being taken seriously and assured that an investigation would be launched immediately.

“We have taken note of the reports and attach great importance to this matter. An investigation will commence immediately. Before the findings are released, we urge that unverified information not be circulated,” the Embassy stated.

The Embassy also stressed that the Chinese government requires all its citizens abroad to respect local laws and conduct business in line with regulations.

The rescued workers, who arrived in Nigeria last week, recounted harrowing experiences of abuse, hunger, and withheld wages while working for the Chinese mining company in CAR. Their testimonies have intensified calls for justice and stricter oversight of foreign companies employing Nigerians abroad.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), which received the victims in Abuja, has promised to pursue justice and ensure that their rights are protected. Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to defending Nigerians facing exploitation abroad.

The outcome of the Embassy’s investigation is expected to determine the next line of action. Meanwhile, human rights groups have urged both the Nigerian and Chinese governments to ensure accountability and prevent similar cases in the future.
