Dangote Cement Plc has pledged comprehensive support for Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Phyna, following a serious accident involving one of the company’s cement trucks in Auchi, Edo State.
The incident, which happened last Wednesday, occurred just six days after Ruth graduated from Auchi Polytechnic. According to Phyna’s account, the truck ran over her sister’s leg before a bystander managed to stop the driver. The accident resulted in severe injuries, leading to the amputation of Ruth’s leg. Witnesses allege that the truck driver attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended.
In a statement released on Thursday via its official X (formerly Twitter) page, Dangote Cement confirmed the incident and stated that senior company officials, alongside its insurance partners, had visited Ruth and her family at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.
The statement read in part:
“Following the road accident in Auchi involving one of our trucks, which unfortunately led to injury to Mrs. Ruth Otabor, our senior officials, together with our insurance team, visited the scene, engaged law enforcement, and met with the victim and her family at the hospital.
This reflects our commitment to the well-being of those affected. We are providing full medical support and appropriate compensation in line with our welfare policy. We wish her a speedy recovery.”
Phyna, who raised the alarm on social media, expressed dissatisfaction with how the matter was initially handled but confirmed that her family is now in direct contact with Dangote Cement’s representatives.
The development has sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians sympathising with Ruth and calling for stricter safety regulations for heavy-duty trucks in residential and urban areas.
