Lawmaker Gives WAEC 7-Day Ultimatum Over Withheld Results of Over 190,000 Students
Abuja, Nigeria – A federal lawmaker, Hon. Chinedu Ogah, has issued a stern warning to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), demanding the immediate release of over 192,000 WASSCE results currently withheld over alleged exam malpractice.
Ogah, who represents Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, gave the examination body a seven-day ultimatum to release the results or face legal action. He described WAEC’s action as a form of sabotage against the academic future of Nigerian students.
“It is unacceptable that after writing both WAEC and JAMB, many of these students are now being denied access to their results on flimsy grounds,” Ogah said in a press briefing.
According to WAEC’s Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, the results in question account for 9.75% of all candidates who sat for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The results were reportedly withheld due to widespread allegations of malpractice.
But Ogah argues that WAEC’s handling of the situation is flawed and unjust.
“WAEC deploys supervisors and invigilators to monitor exams. If malpractice truly occurred, it should have been addressed at the time, not months after,” he said.
He expressed concerns that many of the affected candidates are now unable to apply for admission into tertiary institutions, risking wasted academic years and potential psychological distress.
“This kind of institutional delay frustrates young Nigerians and could push some of them into crime or other harmful paths,” Ogah added.
He also pointed out that such controversies are rarely reported in other WAEC-participating countries like Ghana and Sierra Leone, calling on the body to uphold fairness and transparency in its operations.
Ogah vowed to take legal action if WAEC fails to act within the one-week deadline.
“This is a direct abuse of power. If these results are not released, I will not hesitate to challenge WAEC in court,” he concluded.
