I’m not desperate for power — Obi reacts to criticism over one-term promise
Abuja — Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to serve only a single term if elected president in 2027, saying the decision is based on a desire to deliver impactful reforms within four years — not desperation.
In a statement shared via social media on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor addressed critics who questioned the sincerity and feasibility of his promise.
“It’s baffling that my offer to serve for just four years is being misinterpreted. Real change is possible in 48 months if there’s sincerity and focus,” Obi said.
He dismissed claims that his vow reflects desperation, insisting that his political track record has never included aggressive tactics or shifting principles for personal gain.
“I’ve never been desperate for power. I don’t make unrealistic promises or attack opponents. My focus has always been service, not self,” he added.
Obi argued that significant reforms — including tackling corruption, boosting infrastructure, and improving education and healthcare — can be implemented within one term.
“We can redirect wasted resources into critical sectors. Leadership isn’t about entitlement; it’s about responsibility and results,” he said.
He also emphasized his clean record in electoral conduct, urging critics to verify his history. The one-term proposal has stirred mixed reactions across the political landscape, emerging as a key talking point ahead of the 2027 general election.
As the 2027 elections approach, Peter Obi’s single-term pledge continues to spark national debate, with supporters hailing it as a bold and selfless move, while critics question its practicality.
