Abuja, Nigeria – Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has demanded the unconditional release of human rights activist and Sahara Reporters founder, Omoyele Sowore, following his arrest in Abuja.
Sowore, known for his activism and leadership of the #RevolutionNow movement, was taken into custody after reportedly honouring a police invitation. The Nigeria Police Force has not released details of the allegations against him, but political analysts believe the arrest may be tied to his recent criticism of government policies.
In a statement posted on his official X (Twitter) handle, Obi described the detention as “a miscarriage of justice and an abuse of state power”.
“If there are allegations, charge him to court. If not, release him immediately. The rule of law must be upheld for all, regardless of ideology or political affiliation,” Obi wrote.
Sowore is a prominent journalist and activist who has consistently spoken against corruption and bad governance in Nigeria.
In 2019, he was arrested and charged with treason for organising nationwide protests, drawing condemnation from Amnesty International and other rights groups.
He ran for president in 2019 and 2023 under the African Action Congress (AAC) platform.
As of press time, police authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding Sowore’s detention.
