Top Boko Haram Commander Killed as Troops Repel Attack in Rann, Borno State

A high-ranking Boko Haram leader, identified as Abu Nasr (also known as Amir Fiya), has been killed alongside several fighters during a failed attack on Rann, the headquarters of Kala Balge Local Government Area in Borno State. According to reliable security sources, the assault — launched by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists from neighbouring Cameroon — was repelled by troops of the North East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), with support from air operations.

The encounter, which began late Thursday, 7 August, and continued into the early hours of Friday, 8 August, 2025, saw fierce fighting that left scores of insurgents dead. Among them was Abu Nasr, believed to have led the infiltration attempt.

Security operatives confirmed that at least seven bodies of terrorists were recovered, with blood trails indicating more casualties. Several weapons, including AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), magazines, and other explosive devices, were seized.

Sadly, the military reported that two soldiers lost their lives when an RPG struck their vehicle during the battle.

Rann, which lies close to Cameroon and is about 197 kilometres from Maiduguri, has faced repeated attacks from insurgents in recent years. Military officials say troops remain on high alert and are combing the surrounding areas to prevent further infiltration.
