Troops Repel Boko Haram Attack in Borno, Foil IED Plot on Marte–Dikwa Bridge

Military crushes fresh Boko Haram offensive

Nigerian troops under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have successfully neutralized multiple Boko Haram fighters during coordinated raids across Konduga, Bama, and Gwoza local government areas of Borno State. The operations, led by Theatre Commander Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, also disrupted an attempt by insurgents to plant improvised  explosive devices (IEDs) on a key bridge linking Marte and Dikwa — a major route for both military operations and civilian movement.

Statement from the Army

According to Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for OPHK, the troops, supported by the Air Component, carried out a series of ambushes and fighting patrols, leading to the death of at least nine insurgents and the seizure of AK-47 rifles, a PKT machine gun, and IED-making equipment.

“These sustained operations are aimed at denying insurgents freedom of action and ensuring the safety of communities in the North East,” Kovangiya stated.

Recent momentum in counter-insurgency efforts

This development comes barely a week after troops killed a notorious Boko Haram commander, Ibn Khalid, along with 17 fighters in Bitta, Gwoza LGA, recovering a cache of weapons and supplies.

Security analysts believe the latest offensives show renewed military momentum against insurgent groups in the region. Kovangiya urged residents to continue working closely with security forces:

“We call on the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information on suspicious activities to help the military in its efforts to restore peace,” he said.

The recent successes underscore the military’s growing pressure on Boko Haram strongholds. However, experts warn that lasting stability will require sustained operations, intelligence sharing, and deepened community cooperation to prevent the insurgents from regrouping.
